Pedro Munhoz VS Cody Garbrandt

Cody “No Love” Garbrandt and Pedro “The Young Punisher” Munhoz meet in a pivotal fight for the 135 pound division. Coming from losing twice in a row via stoppage to current bantamweight ruler TJ Dillashaw, Garbrandt is badly in need of a win. Munhoz has been steadily climbing the division´s rankings in his last fights, earning a decisive stoppage over Brian Caraway in his last outing. Grabrandt is a magnificent athlete and extremely talented individual, who nevertheless gets in trouble usually becuase of his questionable fight IQ and a suspect chin, to say the least. Grabrandt is probably the best pure boxer in the division along with Petr Yan. Combined with his wrestling background and natural ko power it makes him a force to be reckoned with when he fights to his full potential. Pedro Munhoz is more of a pressure fighter who relies on his chin and the threat of his trademark guillotine choke to prevent opponents from taking him down as he sometimes pressures almost carelessly. He forces a high pace and is always looking to hurt his rivals in the search of a finish. If not for his chin issues I would favour Garbrandt to run away with this fight using his boxing and footwork for a clear cut decision or even a stoppage turning Pedro´s agressiveness against him. He certainly has the tools to do it. He fought overly emotional in his Dillashaw´s bouts and it cost him the fight both times, being finished after rocking Dillashaw both times. But Munhoz certainly has the ability here to hurt him and then finish or choke him out. Cody does not seem to be emotionally invested in this fight as much as the previous ones and that could be the key to his victory here, as he is going to need to box and counter beautifully and not force things for the whole duration of the fight. This is a fascinating fight with great contrast of styles. The pick here is a vintage performance by Cody to get the job done over the Brazilian Munhoz, probably via decision in a cerebral display of his skills, but a stoppage by either man would be no surprise. At the moment of this writing Garbrandt is favoured by oddsmakers at (-165) with Munhoz sitting at (+145). The play for this fight will probably be Garbrandt, and a poke at Garbrandt KO/TKO and Munhoz by submission are interesting depending on the value in those lines when released.
